ก่อนเช้าวันที่ 29 สิงหาคม 2005 โนแลน เฮเยอร์ (พอล วอล์คเกอร์) มาถึงโรงพยาบาล
นิวออร์ลีนส์พร้อมด้วยภรรยาที่ตั้งท้องซึ่งมีอาการคลอดก่อนกำหนด วันที่ควรเป็นวันแห่งความสุขที่สุดของโนแลน กลายเป็นสิ่งที่ควบคุมไม่ได้ เมื่อการคลอดผิดพลาดอย่างน่าเศร้า และเฮอริเคนแคทรีนาพัดกระหน่ำเข้าใส่โรงพยาบาลทำให้ต้องอพยพ ขณะที่โนแลนกับบุตรแรกเกิดที่ต้องใช้เครื่องช่วยหายใจกำลังรอรถพยาบาลมารับ กระแสไฟเกิดขัดข้องและระดับน้ำได้สูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ โนแลนจึงต้องตัดสินใจบนความเป็นความตายในการฝ่าฝันวิกฤติเพื่อรักษาชีวิตของตัวเองและลูกสาวของเขาให้ได้
