เรื่องย่อ

         ในวันธรรมดาวันหนึ่ง เจอร์รี่ เลนและครอบครัว พบว่าการเดินทางบนท้องถนนที่เคยเงียบสงบของพวกเขา ต้องเผชิญหน้ากับการจราจรติดขัดกลางเมือง เลนที่ในอดีตเคยเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่สืบสวนขององค์การสหประชาชาติ รู้สึกว่านี่ไม่ใช่รถติดธรรมดา และเมื่อมีเฮลิคอปเตอร์ของตำรวจบินอยู่ร่อนอยู่เหนือท้องฟ้า และมีมอเตอร์ไซค์ของตำรวจวิ่งไปมาอยู่เบื้องล่าง ทั้งเมืองต้องเผชิญกับเหตุโกลาหล

บางสิ่งบางอย่างกำลังเป็นเหตุให้ผู้คนทำร้ายกันอย่างรุนแรง มันคือเชื้อไวรัสที่แพร่กระจายได้ผ่านการโดนกัดเพียงครั้งเดียว และเปลี่ยนมนุษย์ที่มีสุขภาพแข็งแรงดีให้กลายเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่จดจำอดีตไม่ ได้ ไม่มีความรู้สึกรับรู้ ไม่มีความคิด และดุร้าย เพื่อนบ้านหันมาทำร้ายเพื่อนบ้าน คนแปลกหน้าที่มีน้ำใจช่วยเหลือจู่ๆ ก็กลายเป็นศัตรูตัวร้าย ต้นกำเนิดของไวรัสชนิดนี้ยังไม่ทราบที่มา และจำนวนคนติดเชื้อเพิ่มมากขึ้นในแต่ละวัน จนกลายเป็นโรคระบาดไปทั่วโลก เมื่อผู้ติดเชื้อมีชัยเหนือกองทัพของโลก และทำให้หลายรัฐบาลต้องล่มสลาย เลนถูกสถานการณ์บีบให้ต้องหวนกลับไปใช้ชีวิตแบบเก่าที่เต็มไปด้วยอันตราย เพื่อรับประกันความปลอดภัยของครอบครัวของเขา และเป็นผู้นำการค้นหาที่มาของโรคระบาดทั่วโลก อันจะเป็นหนทางที่จะหยุดการแพร่ระบาดที่ไม่มีทีท่าว่าจะหยุดได้
